Revenge is the act of doing something to hurt someone because that person has done something to hurt you, and it is usually enacted “in kind”. Revenge, while it may galvanize a person to quick action, is an insufficient motivator. Its intense, single-minded brutality makes effective action in pursuit of lasting, large-scale change impossible. Revenge is often acted out in unbreaking rage, with sloppy attention to detail and consequences. Rage driven actions generally narrow perspective, allowing the person to only be focused on a single thing. Many actions carried out in a fit of anger do not have effect desired by the actor. In short, Titus is a brute. He is ruthless, and tries to kill as many of his peers as possible even though that is not the point of the game they are forced to play in the Institute. Titus’s attitude towards the Golds and his want for revenge seems unprecedented; however, he reveals that he is not one of them. He is a Red who was carved into a Gold just like Darrow. For this very reason, he scoffs at the thought of even considering the other Golds his friends because “they are monsters, soulless bastards [and] nothing but cannibals” (Brown 217). It is ironic how he can feel this strongly about a group of people when he is doing the exact same thing he is criticizing them for. He is raping their girls, just as “they took her and raped her in front of him” (Brown 217). He thinks hurting those who hurt him so bad will somehow make him feel better. However, it does nothing for him, but in his eyes “their daughters bloodywellI got what she got” because he is set in the “eye for an eye” mentality (Brown 218). He believes that by taking from them what they took from him he is righting the wrongs of the universe when that is really not the case. He is only making things worse for himself and is subjecting innocent girls to the cruelties he wished he could have protected his loved one from. He tries so hard to reduce them to nothing, but in only proves how much of a hold they have over him. He is unable to function without thinking about how he will exact his revenge, but it does nothing to affect the Golds because they are unaware of his intentions. After noticing this, Darrow is able to understand that “Titus is what Dancer did not want [him] to become” because “he is a creature of vengeance” (Brown 219; 219). Dancer wanted him to know that revenge will get him nowhere, so this realization not only reaffirms Darrow’s goal, but it also
