(Hook)The power of being impacted by group peers can lead to bad choices that affect the rest of your life . Ira Sher ,in the short story, “The Man in the Well '', characterizes the man in the well as an unfortunate and eager man who shows how scared he is through his speech plus actions . Ira Sher also shows how cruel the children acted towards the man tricking him and letting him die .Ira Sher uses the children's interactions with the man in the well to thematically state that people can act in cruel ways when they hold power over others. Ira Sher also shows how cruel the children acted towards the man tricking him and letting him die. One way Ira Sher helps the reader understand that the man was desperate and was trying to get out of the well but the children were reluctant to help . A piece of evidence from the text is (“God, get me out. I’ve been here for days.” He must have known we were children, because he immediately instructed us to “go get a ladder, get help.”). From the children's perspective they knew the man was scared in the well and kept asking for help but they decided not to help him . Another piece of evidence is (“Go tell your parents there’s someone in this well. If they have a rope or a ladder...” he trailed off. His voice was raw and sometimes he would cough. “Just tell your parents.”) Through the man's voice you can acknowledge that the man was scared and the kids took advantage of the desperate man leading him to think he was going to get help. But along the way we slowed down, and then we stopped, and after waiting what seemed like a good while, we quietly came back to the well.”) The children had a chance to save and help the man but they stopped when they didnt feel afraid of the man and felt power over the man's head. Another piece of the children's speech from the text includes ( “ We got up and began running, filling up with panic as we moved, until we were racing across the ruts of the old field. I kept turning, stumbling as I looked behind. Perhaps he had heard us getting up and running away from the well. ) The children were acting if the man in the well who was dying as a game they were running from the man running from their cries for help.
