Themes In R. J Palacio's Freak The Mighty

In the novel Wonder by R. J Palacio, a great theme is having a bestfriend to stick by your side is better than being someone you’re not. Also in the novel Freak the Mighty this is a great theme too. This proves that one theme can go for many books. In the novel Wonder, August is a boy with facial deformities just trying to live a normal life while he can. To add on, in the book Freak the Mighty, Freak is a boy with growing problems just trying to live his life to the fullest and have fun while doing it. Both these boys know that they may never be the most perfect people but when they both make the most perfect friend, they feel like they could both conquer anything!
In the book Wonder, August Pullman is a average 10 year old boy with facial deformities. Because of his face and all the surgeries he has had, he is homeschooled by his mother. Trying to get around each day, he knows he would never do good in a public school but when he hears the news he was going, there was a lot of fighting and conflict. He knew a kid named Max, who used to bully him back in pre-school. The boys are now entering middle school with the unexpected surprise of them being neighbors. Max has a feeling Freak will remember pre-school and the bullying but apparently he does not. Freak was outside playing with a toy bird he built himself when it got stuck in a tree. Max saw that the bird is stuck in the tree and that Freak is struggling to get it out. At that moment Max knew that he wanted to help Freak and from that instinct, he wanted to become his friend too. He went out and helped Freak get the bird and they started talking and catching up.
