Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City. He was the second of four children to Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt. His father was New York City’s leading philanthropist and a hardworking glass importer. From an infant, Roosevelt suffered from chronic asthma attacks and needed to stay home. None of the Roosevelt children went to school outside of the home due to health ailments. He was homeschooled by his mother and a french governess where he learned of his love of nature and books. He combined his two hobbies and studied about nature and the outdoors. In the 1860s, the civil war changed his life.
