An important historic doctrine of the early fifth century was that of Theotokos. This is a Greek title given to the Virgin Mary used in many Eastern Orthodox churches. This title is a highly symbolic relic from the Christology controversy and is still used in contemporary churches. “The title itself means ‘bearer of God’ or ‘God-bearer’ (pp. 211).” A less preferred translation is “mother of God.” This title is used to show “the belief in Jesus’ true divinity. When Mary gave birth to her little boy, she gave birth to God (pp. 211).”

I did not realize the exact story behind the doctrine until this section of reading. The relationship of Mary to the Christology of Jesus Christ is rather interesting, but seemed like a moot point compared to the other doctrines being discussed at this time of church history. The fact that she gave birth the Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior who is both fully divine and fully human is all that should really matter. Appreciating and respecting the miracle that took place should be the focus of the conversation not the little details regarding the title given to Mary as being “God-bearer” or “Christ-bearer”. As seen during the fifth century, the debate about whether Mary was the Theotokos or the Christotokos caused division and dissension within the church. Both groups, the Alexandrians and the Antiochenes, did various things to prove they were right and to show that the other group was wrong to the point of heresy. They believed that the doctrine was worthy of such a fight, because it affected salvation. The lesson to be learned here by contemporary churches is to always err on the side of caution. When arguing with other brothers and sisters in Christ over small details of the Scripture, one needs to be sure that they are doing so in love and discernment from God. Even if the person or group feels that it is a doctrine that could affect the understanding of the Gospel and salvation, it is better to stand for what you believe in love than to fight with other believers and show those watching that Christians care more about doctrine than about people. One needs to trust in God and the Holy Spirit in difficult situations. God will ensure that his truth is shared to the world. It is our job to show his love to everyone first and then to share the Gospel. Our words will mean nothing without the love of God with
