The practice of Therapeutic Touch is the laying of the hands, at least 4-10 inches away, from the body and centering and assessing the energy field of the individual. At the same time as the hands are being laid on the person, there is a positive focus of intentions by the practitioner to the individual which promotes self-healing in that person. Unlike in Reiki, which has no certification, just involves 3 levels of instruction with a Reiki Master, Therapeutic Touch has a highly structured and rigorous training process making this therapy a disciplined practice. Therapeutic Touch has been researched and effective in relieving tension, headache, improving function in individuals suffering from arthritis; reducing complications from bone marrow transplant; improving measures of pain, anxiety, and improving the immune function in patients with burns; and improving chronic pain and anxiety in individuals older than 65 years. In patients suffering from cardiovascular disease, Therapeutic Touch has decreased anxiety. Although Therapeutic Touch has been shown to have positive effects of the physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspect of the individual, there is a lack of appropriate studies and measures to replicate some methodologies that deal with Therapeutic Touch therapy.
