Imagine having a stranger tell you thing(s) you to know to be true, are wrong; your individual understanding of religion, a system of right and wrong, how you live your life. Perhaps you would become defensive and angry. In today’s society and really in any society, it seems like the invader would be out of their place saying such things, but the truth is; in colonialism, the bigger man wins. Colonialism has been documented in multiple cultures and throughout history in places like India, Africa, and even present day Americas. Although colonialism has provided good in some communities along the way, it still suffocated the traditions of the native cultures it consumed and in the process, occasionally eradicated the soul of the people. During the time, Africa was mainly made up of interlinking family communities created by the villages that inhabited the lands. Chinua Achebe, a famous Nigerian author, focused on the denaturing of (fictional) villages in Nigeria during the Scramble. Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart follows Okonkwo, a native man who is very faithful to his family's beliefs and customs. The book says, “Okonkwo was deeply grieved... He mourned for the clan, which he saw breaking up and falling apart” (Achebe 183). This quote is very evident in the book because is just how much the colonization of his homeland change the people. There is a recognizable amount of development that always follows Colonialism. In India, British government science officials reduced the death rate of disease like malaria and smallpox. In Africa, education and medicines were provided to villages all over Africa. Villages that previously used only religious practices and unlogical methods of healing. For the Native Americans, they two were offered schooling. Although, through colonialism, large numbers of people were saved from dying, the development of invading country was great. The fact that natives might be close enough to a school, which is probably biased against them, will never overshadow that of pain and suffering caused by the colonialists. Great Britain broke India’s economy but strengthened their own in the process. Europeans punished Africans for doing what they believed just.
