Melissa Oldfield 7 October 2014 The Declaration of Independence America has not always been free. Before, Americans were ran by Great Britain and their harsh government. Nobody liked the way King George III, of Great Britain, was treating the American colonies. He would have favorite colonies, and those who he had no likings towards, he was harsh and treated them like slaves or plain dirt. The American people were tired of this. They wanted to be their own government. So one man, one of America’s most legendary men, decided to make up a document. Not just any document, this document was “The Declaration of Independence.” The man who wrote this particular document, his name was Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson managed to organize the Declaration to where it contained an introduction, a preface, an indictment of King George III, criticism of the British people, and finally a conclusion. Firstly, Jefferson started with an introduction of “The Declaration of Independence.” Thus being the first paragraph in the document. Furthermore, the preface is announced in the document which is short, but provides maximum clarity for the reader. It is a common example of 18th century style writing, providing one hundred percent clarity, while still being short, sweet, and right to the point. In the preface Jefferson adds in five main points that seemed to make the American people happy if they seemed to live the way he was describing. Theses ways being: All men are created equally, they are endowed by their creator with certin unalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, and whenever any form of government becomes “destructive” the people have the right to alter or abolish it.
