Three experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today. I am an overachiever, defensive, an active reader, and I want to help people be free and happy. Ultimately, they have all led to the same outcome, my desire to become a lawyer. In the fourth grade, we--Latinas and Latinos-- were prohibited from speaking Spanish at school because our school believed that it would be offensive to the non Spanish speakers. They did not stop to think how it would affect us, we were in the country of American citizens and have spent most of our lives being discriminated or looked at funny because of how we spoke or what we spoke. I am the youngest and I desired attention as any child would. My love for vampires became the thing that saved my childhood. I was always fascinated, and feared, those mystical creatures of the night. Every Halloween I dressed up as a vampire or witch, although they were popular in the early 21st century, and enjoyed the rush from being someone else for a while. My love for vampires led me to my love of literature. In the third grade, we received Scholastic magazines to promote reading, and while I hated reading at the time, I looked through it, and it one of the wisest decision I have ever made. I found a book about a girl who discovers she has a long lost twin sister who is a vampire, “My Sister the Vampire” by Sienna Mercer, and fell in love with it and all the ideas of vampirism; my love for that book led me to my love for other vampire books such as “The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod” series, that ultimately led me to my love for other books that have changed my life and taught me that I never have to be alone as long as I have a good book. It led me to meet great friends who were part of the same fandoms as me. It helped me see that as long as I try and do not give up, I can achieve. I can help protect the innocent and discriminated even though I’m an average
