Positivity can affect not only one’s self, but those around them as well. In the face of responding to conflict, positivity can reduce stress and anxiety, help health, and provide a better environment. During times of conflict, positivity has been proven to reduce both stress and anxiety. Having a positive attitude can make people less stressed during a time of conflict. According to the Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health, “...optimists tend to use coping strategies that focalize on the problem more frequently compared to pessimists. Happiness is an emotion, which makes it subjective, so it is difficult to have a definite meaning for the word. Is happiness just the absence of a negative feeling or is it the feeling of fulfillment and joy? Depending on the person, the answer varies and different activities make different types of people happy. Furthermore, each individual is willing to sacrifice certain materials to bring them joy. Nevertheless, in general, as a society, people sacrifice certain things, like money and time, in order to “make them happy.”

Happiness is achieved through having purpose in life. The happiest people see their goals they set as reachable and a sense of purpose, while people who are cynical have no sense of purpose in their life or perceive themselves as unable to reach the goals they have set for themselves. While some cultures are better than others at encouraging people to follow their dreams, it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual to find and achieve their purpose in life. It applies everywhere and is a concept that most have. Happiness is achieving your own dreams and fulfilling your own need of satiation. In the play Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman could not achieve his happiness because he could not provide everything he dreamed of. He was always worrying, he never had enough, and was troubled.

Optimism is hopefulness for the future, and, like me, most people get their optimism from their roots, or how they were brought up as a child. My parents would always remind me from a young age that being pessimistic will not help you achieve your goal, so you might as well be optimistic and try. They have always taught me from a young age, and never denied or doubted, that with optimism comes opportunity, and that optimism is, in fact, the key to success. Over the years, I’ve learned that the more optimistic you are, the more creative you can be. With optimistic attitude, one can generate new ideas and create possibilities to move forward faster and more efficiently than at normal times, due to an open mind.

The term “happy” was originated from 1520s Old English.
