To better understand campus crime, one needs to realize that it involves several contexts—the legal, the social, and the security—and that each context is interrelated with the others (Fisher & Sloan, 2007). The legal context involves judicial and legislative efforts to address campus crime, including institutional liability for on-campus victimizations and Congressional and state legislative efforts to address the problem. The social context involves efforts to develop more accurate measures of the extent and nature of campus crime, identify its major correlates, and understand better its temporal and spatial distribution. As I walked down 125th ST Lexington Avenue I took a picture of a NYPD trailer park, because that’s what I see every day as I’m heading to work. This trailer park represents criminal justice to me because the officers that are in it help to reduce the crime. 125th St was A neighborhood full of homeless people, who spent their days smoking 2K which is synthetic marijuana. The NYPD trailer park is their twenty for seven helping to get the 2K off the street. One way the officers are helping is by getting the bodegas to stop selling it.

In “The Power of Context,” Gladwell expands into his own personal theories behind the city’s decline in crime. He brings attention to two hypotheses: the power of context and the broken-window hypothesis. The broken-window hypothesis was implemented by New York leaders in collaboration with the police department to take stricter action with minor crimes occurring in the city, such as graffiti and small burglaries.

The inner moral compulsion to obey is what drives most social organizations. Sykes (2007) described several structural defects that occurred in the New Jersey State prison. Sykes (2007) argues that power in prison is not based on authority therefore prison officials have to find other means to get prisoners to abide by the rules and regulations. The ability to use force to maintain order on a large scale in the prison is an illusion. According to Sykes (2007), Certain privileges such mailing and visiting, personal possessions, time-off for good behavior etc. are given to the inmate all at once upon his or her arrival to the prison.
Prison reform has been an ongoing topic in the history of America, and has gone through many changes in America's past. Mixed feelings have been persevered on the status of implementing these prison reform programs, with little getting done, and whether it is the right thing to do to help those who have committed a crime. Many criminal justice experts have viewed imprisonment as a way to improve oneself and maintain that people in prison come out changed for the better (encyclopedia.com, 2007). In the colonial days, American prisons were utilized to brutally punish individuals, creating a gruesome experience for the prisoners in an attempt to make them rectify their behavior and fear a return to prison (encyclopedia.com, 2007). This practice may have worked 200 years ago, but as the world has grown more complex, time has proven that fear alone does not prevent recidivism.
In chapter 1, Sykes describe a multitude of justifications for imprisonment. According to Sykes (2007), imprisonment is the appropriate consequences of most serious crimes. For example, if an individual is robbing and killing people in a community, the appropriate response to such violent crime is to place that individual in prison. In The Society of Captives book, many prisoners alluded to the fact that if one if one is committing crime he or she should be ready to endure the hardship of imprisonment. Imprisonment is justified on these three grounds, deterrence, punishment and reform.
Deterrence and Recidivism Crime prevention is a key aim of the criminal justice system. Offenders are incarcerated in prisons in a expectation that they will feel punished enough to learn from their mistakes and not commit further crimes, this is called deterrence and is a main goal of prisons today (Daly, 2003). Prisons in their current form are often overcrowded, anxiety inducing, restrictive and have been found to exacerbate the mental health of offenders (Matthews, 2016). In saying this, research by Crank and Brezina (2012) suggests that some offenders find prison ‘easier than being on the street’. Crank and Brezina (2012) conducted a study where they surveyed a large group of inmates and questioned them on their views of being incarcerated.
By the late nineteenth century it became clear that the ideology of penal reform that had held together the framework of the penitentiary was dissolving. Progressive reformers realized the values and strategies that once were effective in battling the tumultuous effect of urbanization, industrialization, and mass immigration to be ineffective. The theories proposed by psychologist Sigmund Freud and naturalist Charles Darwin launched a new conversation in the reform community. Reformers such as Brockway turned to this new “scientific knowledge” in order to combat the crumbling notions of reform, pushing progressive strategies to focus on the nature of the offender, rather then the offence (Blomberg & Lucken, 2010, pp.61-71).
Often, non-violent offenders go into these centers for petty crimes such as; possession of drugs, receiving stolen property, or shoplifting.
