The first artwork that I have chosen to discuss is Drawing for the film Tide Table: Beach Hotel at Night, 2005. William Kentridge created this drawing using charcoal on paper. Charcoal, the medium, is one of the many drawing tools that artists use to create drawings. This drawing is done of the most common support for its kind, paper.
Kentridge utilized charcoal to his advantage to create the different tones present in the drawing. Kentridge used differing marks of charcoal throughout the drawing in order to create different elements of depth and shadows. There are also many lines through this drawing, diagonal, horizontal and vertical.

The next artwork that I have chosen to discuss is Enigmatic Combat, 1936-1937. Created by Arshile Gorky, this artwork utilizes oil on canvas to create an abstract painting. Oil paint is very versatile. It uses linseed oil as its binder with pigment. Since it is very versatile, there are many pigments to choose from. As an artist, the varying pigment that can be used in paintings can also be manipulated. This is because it can be thinned down to create light shades as well as a thick paste. Abstract painting can be utilized to show varying layers. In this painting, the viewer can see various layers being built, with different shades and depth. Utilizing the many pigments available in oil on painting paintings, we see varying shags of green, orange, yellow, and red. Since abstract paintings focus on the act of painting, it is evident that the act of painting was shown with the varying subject manner. Abstract paintings utilize many shapes, lines, and colors to create art. In this drawing, there are outlined lines, vertical lines, horizontal lines, and implied lines. Along with this, there are many geometric lines as well. A limitation of oil painting, which can also be seen as an advantage, Is its slow drying time. However, this may have been an advantage to the artist because it appears that each part is distinct and it appears to have taken a year to make.
