Tim Burton’s Success
Tim Burton is an extraordinary film writer with satisfying characters and themes. It is easy to determine which films are written by Burton from the supernatural plots and dramatic sequences. Three films that will be cited in this essay are Edward Scissorhands, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Alice in Wonderland. Each film is about ominous events with mythical characters which make the films unique. The three cinematic categories that best fit with all films chosen are shots and framing, camera movements and editing techniques. Shots and framing is not only a cinematic category, but one of the most visible in Burton’s films. In more detail, shots and framing is where angles, transitions and cuts are used to further express emotions and ideas. Editing techniques is basically the practice of assembling shots into a coherent sequence. In the film Edward Scissorhands, the cut technique was shown in an unusual way. During the scene when all the townspeople were on the phone articulating about Peg’s new visitor that she is withholding from them. This was displayed to show the connection between each character and how friendly the community is. Also, in the film Alice in Wonderland, the technique shot-reverse-shot was used quite often throughout the film. During the scene when the Red King and Bayard, the dog, were going on a search for Alice and Bayard was concerned about when he gets to see his family once again. This contributes to this scene to show the conversation between the two, which helps the audience understand more about the situation. Editing techniques helps the film become more alive and helps draw attention to the film itself, which is why this film is believed to be extremely successful and
