In every film I have ever watched, the role of music has always made an astonishing impact on the experience of watching films. The role of sound and more importantly music is something that is very hard to comprehend on how the magic of movies and music are combined to make an everlasting effect on the movies audience. Music in film is something we take for granted and we never really understand the true workmanship that goes into making a movie, but in this essay I will explore the importance of music in films. I will be discussing how the impact of music plays an important role in what the director wants its viewers to convey as in one of the most famously known films in the world, Titanic.

In this movie, music is present throughout the film and it plays a really important part in portraying the director's purpose of the scene. The director uses both source music and underscore music in the film to successfully enable the actors to set the presented mood. When the two main characters fall in love with each other, their true love is tested by a disastrous obstacles that everybody on board the ship has to face. The scene I believe is very important is when it occurs in the very end after the ship strikes an iceberg and is now on the verge of completely being submerged underwater of the freezing Atlantic ocean. In the scene, it involves a group of instrument players who stop playing on the top deck of the sinking ship once they realize they should try to save themselves from drowning. But one violinist stays and continues to play because he knows they all have a little luck of surviving. The string ensemble soon come back together and began to play “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” which is a 19 century Christian hymn by Sarah F. Adams. In this scene, it's a very unique combination of source music and underscore music. I believe the purpose of the song was to let the passengers and ship go down with dignity and peace. Even though the passengers aren't really paying attention or listening to music because they are in a state of panic trying to stay afloat. The scene continues by showing what else is happening during the ship as in other clips of how other passengers are dealing with their deadly fate at that current
