How did the so called unsinkable ship actually sink, and what could they have done to prevent this. Through out this essay I will cover how the Titanic was made all the way to what happend to be able to sink the great Titanic. So the biggest ship in history, sunk in less than an hour. How is that possible. The Titanic having many names such as (“colossal”, “immense”, or the the “big giant”) was the biggest cruise ship ever in the world (Mcpherson,20).Weighing several thousand tons, the Titanic was the worlds largest ship (Mcpherson,12). The Titanic was made at the Harland and Wolff shipyard.They had to build the Arrol Gantry, or also known as the Great Gantry to withstand the pressure to hold the Titanic (Mcpherson,17). During the building of the Titanic there were more than two thousand steel rivets, each 1 inch thick in the Titanics framework (Mcpherson,17). The Titanic had three anchors that weighed a total of 31 tons. Inside the Titanic there were twenty-nine boilers, or the 2 main engines that generated 55,000 horsepower as it went through the ocean (Mcpherson,20). The Titanic was warned by many different ships about the iceberg but disreguarded them (Mcpherson,27). The iceberg was not noticed because there was not any moonlight for them to see it.The lookout lost his binoculars so it made it hard for him to spot the iceberg in the dark(Johnston, Paul F. "Titanic."). The Titanic recieved many reports of ice from a number of ships. It was already to late when a lookout noticed that there was an iceberg ahead of them (“Lost Liners: Titanic.” ).The captin ordered the engines to be put in reverse and for the ship to take a sharp turn . Instead of hitting the iceberg head on, it skimmimed across the side of the Titanic breching the sides of the Titanic (“Lost Liners: Titanic.”
