The classroom quieted down quickly as Professor Prince began to hand out beetles to his students. The majority of these students seemed to be a mix between anxious and excited as they began practicing turning these beetles into buttons. Alice, however, was calm and collected. She sat at her desk with her eyes on her notes. The key to staying calm and collected was preparation, and the only way to fully prepare for this step in the class was to review everything that had been discussed in the past two weeks. Alice knew that it was important to be fully aware of the being used in the transformation. In this particular case, they were using a black beetle. She cleared her throat and picked up her wand. She very quickly reminded herself that she would need much more willpower than she has had to use on previous transfiguration spells; this is simply because prior spells did not require muffling a creature’s life force. Since this spell required using a beetle, the added willpower needed would be minimal, however if this spell required an animal with a stronger will then more willpower would be needed, as the animal was likely to resist the change. She reached out to remove the glass jar from the desk, which would set the beetle free, and felt a jolt of guilt. She reminded herself that she was not killing the beetle; life would remain within the button since the beetle’s essence would still exist. This soothes the guilt away and she frees the beetle. Her beetle, luckily, seems to be a sleepy one who chooses not to take off on her. Therefore, she doesn’t have to worry too much about aiming, although many of her classmates were currently doing their best to ensure their spell landed on their speedy
