The danger of a single story is that it just offers one stereotypical view of a whole society, and ignores the individual tales of the members of that society. This one accepted story will preach the characteristics of the generalized society and become the truth that everyone is familiar with even though they may be blatant lies. The individuals will just become part of the masses and lose their true identities. Which stories are usually told? The stories that are usually told are the ones that everyone assumes is the true one. These stories generally consist of lies that eventually become the truth in the eyes of individuals that are not part of the stereotype. The townspeople already know the single story of Tom and the single story of all of the other generalized individuals similar to him, which results in a tragic end for Tom. Adichie’s message can also be proven true by the Syrian refugee crisis because many individuals have a single story about their backgrounds.
