Harper Lee uses symbolism to explain the idea of prejudice in the novel. She does this by letting the reader know the people of Maycomb’s feeling towards Tom Robinson with out knowing the whole story. For example, in to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson is put to death for a crime he did not commit. This can relate to when Atticus says, “shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit tem, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This means that it was also a sin to kill a tom Robinson.
To Kill a Mockingbird: In To Kill a Mockingbird there are plenty of lessons that you learn reading the book. The one I am going to talk to about is always being nice by seeing things from other’s point of view. There is a quote from the book “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. This quote is saying be nice to everyone, because you don’t know what they’re going through. The quote was from Atticus.
Harper Lee uses the mad dog to symbolize many things. It shows how Atticus is the one that must do the unpleasant jobs. Just like how Atticus gets rid of Tim Johnson, he also had to deal with Tom Robinson. The dog is put as an outcast just as Tom Robinson is. The dog can also be shown as foreshadowing for Tom Robinson’s case.

The African-American community of Maycomb respects Atticus for doing his best with what he is given and for treating everyone with respect. Scout may not realize at first why she must stand up while her father is leaving, but since she is sitting with the community of African-Americans, she quickly realizes that it is a sign of respect, and it makes the audience feel proud. On the contrary, Mayella Ewell makes a remark that can lead the audience into thinking a variety of things, one of which is terrifying. While Tom Robinson is giving his testimony and explaining what happened while he was in the Ewell house, he states, “She says what her papa do to her don’t count,” (260). Someone could read this and think that her father is raping her, which is very alarming.
A novel talking about society in the mid 90’s shows how evil the people are, including racism, drama, and the meaning behind the title of To Kill A Mockingbird. In the beginning of, To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is very small ant very knowledgeable about things Scout doesn’t even pay attention to what’s happening in Maycomb county. She doesn’t know that practically everyone hates each other. “When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness’ sake. But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles ‘em” (Lee 9).
Mayella Ewell was a poor white girl who lived in a junkyard with her father and siblings, who told a lie that ended up killing an innocent black man. She accused Tom Robinson of rape. Since Tom was a black man the people of Maycomb saw Mayella a young white girl as the victim. Mayella’s gender, race, and class made her powerful in this situation. Harper Lee the author of To Kill A Mockingbird wrote about a young girl who accused a black man of rape.
Iireh Lee Mrs. Han English AG 22 July 2023 Doing right can lead to consequences The scorching hot sun blazed on the two children who were having a standoff. “Nixxer-Lover” Francis, Scout’s cousin, whispered. Scout’s fist smashed into his mouth, but it was only a matter of time before she got into trouble with her Uncle because of it. Why was Scout the only one punished?
The Dangers of Revenge in To Kill a Mockingbird In my opinion in To Kill a Mockingbird revenge has a lot to do in the book. Revenge is the action of hurting, harming or getting payback at someone for doing something bad. One of the main acts of revenge in To Kill a Mockingbird is about Bob Ewell. After the Halloween pageant Jem and scout went to, they were walking home and Bob Ewell had been following them and then attacked Jem and Scout.
The social codes of society make people make unjust decisions that they don’t think much about. After Tom Robinson’s trial, there was a brutal incident where Tom what killed. The text states, “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” (241) There is so much white-power used in Maycomb the second a Mayella accused Tom for rape, he didn’t have a chance. Throughout the book Harper lee proves how prejudice the town is.
Have you ever thought what would happen if one person started to believe in something that’s others didn’t. Then what if everybody else started to follow along. That reminds me of this game called Fortnite. One person started playing it then everybody followed along.
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Quoted by Atticus Finch and Miss Maudie. When Jem gets his first gun Atticus tells him that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, and when Jem asks Miss Maudie about it she agrees and explains Atticus’s theory.
Maycomb is forged by its inhabitants, providing its characteristics. Maycomb is set in Alabama in the 1930s, with racial injustice seen throughout. Through vivid events of the characters, Harper Lee creates a powerful sense of hatred and discrimination. The town's influence can be seen affecting characters, making the town itself feel more like a character. Overall, Maycomb is crucial in revealing the harsh reality of racial inequality and how it affects the decisions made by the characters throughout.
Donald Trump once said, “sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war.” Atticus Finch fights a battle against Maycomb County and although he knows that he will not win he brings Maycomb a step closer to justice. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee utilizes characters, setting, and conflicts in order to illustrate Aunt Alexandra’s acceptance of Scout, Francis ‘ prejudice, and Atticus’ urge for equality.
