Scouts taste of reality
In To Kill a Mockingbird, a young girl named Scout has been through a journey that seemed to be never ending. She’s been through some ups and downs with different adventures she goes through with her brother Jem and their friend Dill. Through all these different encounters of society, Scout has learned a lot. Especially when Scout has been growing up drastically and she has started to understand things more. By looking at what Scout has been through,in To Kill A MockingBird, it is evident that everything she has been told about certain situations don’t seem to add up to the truth. She was not such of the Finch family. She did not like the fact that their dad was the lawyer for the Tom Robinson case. Also, they just felt they were hated by her and did not have enough manners for her liking. However, when meeting Mrs. Dubose, Scout later on witnesses Jem damage her garden then paying the consequence of having to read to her, “Jem and I hated her…We could do nothing to please her...She was vicious...I wondered if Jem’s activities had put her there ,and for a moment I felt sorry for her(pg.132,133,141).Whenever Scout would greet Mrs.Dubose, she would always have something nasty to say to her. This cycle would continue and would show no improvement. Scout then got the impression that Mrs.Dubose was nothing but a cold hearted old lady that was very opinionated. She thought of these characteristics because of the way Mrs.Dubose would act towards Scout and her family. But then later Scout realized how sick she was and her current state of health and she felt bad. Scout later learns that Mrs.Dubose wants her and Jem to always remember her. Because knowing her personally for such a short time period was a drastic way of saying goodbye to her and they felt bad that she died so soon because of being so ill and they always didn’t like her but because of her death they felt so sorry.At first Scout would judge her and would feel a cold rejection from her. Usually she finds out later that what she did was wrong, but she is now learning in the moment. Scout and Jem were finally going to the courthouse for the first time and they finally go in until Dill begins to cry a lot, so Scout decided to leave with Dill so he can calm down until they meet Mr. Dolphus Raymond. “As Mr. Dolphus Raymond was an evil man...I didn’t think Atticus would like it if we became friendly with Mr.Raymond…”You mean all you drink in that sack’s Coca-Cola?...”Yes ma’am”...”Then you just pretend you’re half-? I beg your pardon,sir,” I caught myself.”I didn’t mean to be-”(p.267,268). When Scout saw Dill with Mr. Raymond she distanced herself from both of them because she realized her mistake of falsely judging. Scout almost seemed scared to be seen with Mr. Raymond because she thought someone was going to tell her father and her father was going to be mad.Scout was very aware of the rumors of Mr. Raymond, which was he was always drunk and such. It did not cross Scouts mind that possibly those rumors were false, after all the wrong judgements she been through already. But after all she had learned something about him after simply asking in a indirect way. Scout was immediately mistaken by this case with Mr. Raymond. She has been told some true information about his life, but then the other half was very false and she had found out first hand. So Scout took away that first looks of
