To kill a mockingbird in a novel written by Harper Lee This novel is mostly covering the American racist society in the late 1950-60s. At the beginning of the novel we are introduced to life in Maycomb, life in Maycomb is small town life where the people are a mainly friendly community and hold high values, such as values of the family. However, most of the people tend to be judgmental and intolerant, excluding other people from the community, such as poor people and the black community. Harper Lee was talking about racism towards black people and how they were treated and judged based on their colour. At that period of time black people didn’t have rights like white people. She mentioned class structure and how people were separated based on class “maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin”p.227. Obviously, racism is a major theme of the novel. When Jem and Scout went to church with Calpurnia so they asked her to go and see her house, this visit was never made largely because their aunt Alexandra disapproval for them to go to a black woman’s home “you may not”p.181. She tried to show that kids should be raised on equality and justice towards other people no matter who they are.
