To Kill a Mockingbird is a world renowned book that is loved through the ages. The book carries many themes from racism to prejudice. Some people believe that TKaM doesn’t fit into today's society because it is very old, dating back to the mid 60’s. I think a novel is still relevant if the reader connects today’s society with the plot and characters of the book. In that case, To Kill a Mockingbird is still relevant in today's culture because there is prejudice with different races, people are still stereotyped and labeled, and children learn the responsibilities of a person who came of age.

Jem Finch comes of age when he learns the truth about the old lady he reads to. He finds out that the old lady was a drug addict and didn’t want to deal with the ease of the painkillers she was on so she wanted to be clean when she died. Scout Finch learns the responsibilities of an adult when she witnesses her father gunning down a dog. Atticus shot the dog because it was thought to be rabid but Scout doesn’t think the dog is rabid because it is not showing the signs of a rabid dog. Scout believes that rabid dogs will foam from the mouth and twitch a lot but when she realizes that those were just rumors or stereotypes she then notices that they would never really know if the dog was rabid but to keep their safety they needed to make a decision. Children in today's society learn a ton of things from their parents and older siblings about the struggles of growing up. Kids learn many things from dealing with loss such like Jem and losing innocence like
