Analysis of “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan - Daniela Urday

Thesis: In “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan we are exposed to the cruel behaviour that victims of bullying and mental illness live through. The author is trying to decipher between what 's right and wrong through the impacts of immoral acts and how we can look at morality and find the good in ourselves.

But that just because 1 or 2 people do not like you it does not mean that nobody likes you. Even though there is always going to be someone out there trying to bring you down there is also always gonna be someone out there that is will appreciate you the way you are without having to change a thing. That is why I think that this text does make me think of a moral issue in a different way because it shows that just because people tell you that what the bullies say do not matter and to ignore them you are still allowed to feel sad and angry, but that someone out there will love you and appreciate you the way you are and they will make you feel like a million dollars and love the things that make you different. Another reason why I think this text is a moral piece of literature is because the author is speaking the truth and not making everything seem like a fairy tale and that everyone has a happy ending. He also teaches and encourage to wear your differences with pride. Also that high school can suck for many people that are just a tad different but that in the real world the differences are what are gonna make you shine and stand out from the crowd. It highlights the fact that most of the pain kids have are caused by other kids. That because we are told that “kids can be cruel?” we are oversimplifying the idea of bullying. That the mean harsh words that are thrown and shot at us is just a part of growing up. But it also talks about how what you are told as a kid can lead to depression, addiction, suicide because we live in the world were we try to hide the real issue by degrading it from it 's true power and impact it has on us. Like in the real world right now in the U.S there are many people that are underestimating the issue of gun violence. We look at the case for a while and try to get rid of guns they go to court but after the media doesn’t pay much attention to the topic always dies down and the prevention of guns stops as well. Same goes with the bullying topic we can look at it for a while and try to stop it but after a while we always go back to our old ways and habits. We always go back to disregarding the topic and we can tell that not much has been done because there are still kids that go home crying after school or that are afraid to show to class the next day. But even though this poem is talking about immoral events does not mean that it is an immoral poem because it is teaching us right from wrong. It also instructs, improves and inspire the reader because when showing us what we are doing wrong we are learning from our mistakes. That is why I
