When Mayella was testifying she appeared to be more scared of her father than of Tom. If Mayella’s version of what occurred that night, Tom beat and took advantage of her, and her father came to help, happened, then she would more frightened of him than her father. If Mayella had told the truth, it would have saved her from this court hearing and a man’s life. The defense may say that Mayella was confused and strained under the pressure of the court. However, the truth is the truth and does not get mixed up. They may also say that the defendant had witnesses. That her father was there to see it.
I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 304. This book is about Tom Robinson’s trial. Bob Ewell is accusing Tom of raping his daughter, Mayella. There is no evidence that Tom committed this crime although he is still found guilty. In this paper I will be evaluating.
Based on the evidence during the trial Tom Robinson is not guilty because he was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. In the beginning of “Thomas Robinson testimony he reached around, ran his fingers under his left arm and lifted it. He guided his arm to the bible and his rubber-like left hand sought contact with the black binding”.(Lee 192.) This shows that Thomas Robinson didn’t rape Mayella Ewell because he put his hand on the bible to say that he never did that. This also shows that nobody with a broken arm could do something like that.
A novel called To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. There is a case between an African American named Tom Robinson and a white woman named Mayella Ewell. She accused him of raping her. Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
A man by the name of Tom Robinson is on trial for the rape of a girl by the name of Mayella Ewell. In this trial Tom can be considered innocent be the fact of his left arm is useless. “He [got] it caught in a cotton gin, caught it in Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s cotton gin when he was a boy… like to bleed to death… tore all the muscles loose from his bones-” (Lee 249). Tom is convicted of this crime against Mayella , which is a supposed beating, even though it is lead almost exclusively with the left hand, which Tom cannot use. Tom Robinson is a gentleman and also a very kind and generous man.
Tom Robinson’s trial in August 26, 1935 was an event that everybody in Maycomb knew about. Mr. Ewell accuses Tom of raping his daughter Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch, the defendant’s lawyer asked Mr. Ewell to write his name on a piece of paper to indicate whether he is right or left handed. Mr. Ewell does as instructed and reveals that he is left handed, it was said that there were hand marks on Mayella’s neck from a left handed person. The victim is now called up to speak and she swears to the oath.
For instance, the town of Maycomb treats one of its members, Tom Robinson, poorly without a valid reason based on his skin colour rather than any actions he has done. Especially Mayella , she hands in a false complaint against Tom Robinson. As she utters, “‘I turned around an ’fore I knew it he was on me. Just run up behind me, he did. He got me round the neck, cussin‘ me an’ sayin‘ dirt—I fought’n’hollered, but he had me round the neck.
In the trial in a fictional novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. I firmly believe the jury's verdict should be that Tom is innocent. I believe the jury should arrive at this verdict because Tom had lost his left arm in cotton gin accident and Mayella was beaten on the right side of her face. “If her [Mayella's] right eye was blackened and she was beaten mostly on the right side of her face, it would be likely that a left-handed person did it” (238). It would be practically impossible for Tom to hurt the right side of Mayella’s face because his left arm is crippled.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Tom Robinson is the best representation of a mockingbird because the town created a sin by killing him and he was an innocent man who deserved better. Although some may believe that Boo Radley is a better example of a mockingbird, Tom had an unjustified trial and suffered death because of it. Some people in the town knew Tom’s death was a sin and they didn't agree with it. He was also a helping citizen who did nothing but try and help. Tom was over all an innocent man that displayed peacefulness.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
Mayella has had a hard life facing the abuse of her dad and Tom Robinson was just helping on their farm. Tom needed the money and was a kind man never wanting to hurt anybody, making Tom Robinson a harmless
The twentieth century was filled with racial problems. However in the south racial tensions seemed to be consistently growing. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes what it would be like to grow up in the 1930’s in Maycomb Alabama. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson’s court case shows that the racial tensions in Maycomb Alabama were very extreme.
When Dill left the courthouse in tears, it was because Tom Robinson had been “proven” guilty of crime he didn’t commit, simply because he was black. Almost all of the reliable evidence given during the trial was thrown away and in its place was the fact that the offender was black and the thought that black people were less deserving than white people. To a child who was too young to ever even have the opportunity to experience this sort of biased judgment, witnessing an obviously innocent man be sent to a place he didn’t have any business in was simply horrific. He had come to the sudden (and not mention early) realization that sometimes people die for no good reason. Most frighteningly, this newly discovered Law of Life wasn’t restricted
I, member of the jury, am choosing to vote Tom Robinson not guilty on the account of rapeing Mayella Ewell. All evidence that arose during the trial proves his innocence in the case. Nevertheless, I have to make a decision based on my moral values, not the societal norms of Maycomb County. During the trial, the witness testimonies were continually contradicted.
