Despite all of General Zaroff’s success, fortune and his appeared attitude, Zaroff is in many ways not civilized. Civilized means being polite, well-mannered or treating others with respect. Well Zaroff treats Rainsford good at first evident by giving him a cocktail, treating him to a meal, and hoping to hunt with him until he says “I wish to leave this island at once”. This quote hit Zaroff in his heart.
As the story “The Georges and the Jewels” A girl named Abby in the story always gives up and never wants to do things she can’t do. “But if, right when you let up on the reins, your horse put his head between his knees again and took off bucking, kicking higher and higher until he finally dropped you and went tearing off to the other end of the ring, well, you might lie there, as I did, with the wind knocked out of you and think about how nice it would be not to get back on, because that horse is just dedicated to bucking you off.” This quote explains that Abby gives up because she thought that the horse is just there for bucking her off and never got her things right. Four years prior to his second Inaugural Address, President Lincoln had given a speech about war, “an impending civil war.” Now, after four years of such conflict, the President is issuing a speech of reconciliation, trying to convince his people to come back together with their Southern brethren, and try and heal the grievously wounded nation. A gifted rhetorician, the President used three primary literary tool s to make his point: parallel structure to illustrate similarities between Northerner and Southerner, allusions to the Bible to highlight the Christian values so important to both, and personification to paint the war as an evil enemy, and the nation as a wounded friend. In the second paragraph, Lincoln concludes with the parallel statements “one… would make war rather than let the nation survive… the other would accept war rather than let it parish, and the war came.”
Helen Keller once said "...although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it." This quotation means that in life, you come to find yourself in many struggles, but there is always a sense of accomplishment over such problems. The reason I agree with this quote is because such triumph can only be accomplished after the fact of the occurrence of a struggle.
