In chapters 1-9 of The Wave by Todd Strasser Mr. Ross, a history teacher, has always tried to teach his students at Gordon High School in ways that would make them feel like they were living through history, but he has noticed that majority of his students are not interested and do not really try. One day, Mr. Ross showed his history students a short documentary on Nazi concentration camps that disturbed many students. After the film, many of the students began to question why the Germans did not try to stop Hitler and his Nazi regime, but Mr. Ross could not answer their question. In the 1986 novel Under A Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968. Is based off of the actual events that occurred in the authors Heda Margolius Kovaly’s ife. The memoir explains her struggle of escaping during the Holocaust and surviving during WW2 under the totaliariat rule of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. In post war Czechleslovakia many of it’s citizens embraced the idea of a communist society. Utilizing the information given in Kovaly’s memoir and the textbook, I believe most citizens were embracing towards communisim because they (the citizens) were under the impression that the democracy let the Nazi party take over and failed to defend the country against Hitler.
The people of many nations felt intense pride in their country and the people they identified with. Document I, an excerpt from the textbook depicted a German individual with intense nationalist pride. Intense national pride and nationalism represented one major factor that led to the rise of Fascist regimes. Document L provided evidence of nationalist advocacy for the rise of truly German people above others. Document L, an antisemetic political cartoon entitled Where Something is Rotten, the Jew is the Cause from 1931 that depicted a Jewish worm torn out of an apple by a Nazi knife.
The Doctrine of Fascism by Benito Mussolini claims that fascism is the best form of government compared to Socialism, Liberalism, and Democracy (Document 6). This document shows that the rise of fascist ideologies was a problem that led the world from WWI to WWII because the doctrine is claiming that fascism is the best form of government. This could be seen as propaganda and promoting the idea that fascism is the best form of government. This would lead to countries having anxiety about the countries around them with fascism and would cause tension between countries. Furthermore, a political cartoon from Punch magazine made in 1920, shows a snake named the International Strife and a rabbit named the league of nations (Document 3).
There is immense pressure to report anything the goes against the Socialist Party’s principles, no matter the person. For example, Thomas turns his father in for defending his Jewish colleagues thus insulting Hitler, and is essentially the cause of his death. However, Peter is asked to spy on his boss at the bookstore, but after finding incriminating items he keeps it to himself. These contrasting reactions is an example of how Nazi persuasion is testing loyalties and driving friends apart.
Sam Roberts in the article A Decade of Fear argues that Americans turned against each other because of McCarthyism. Roberts supports his argument by explaining and describing the many occurences of paranoia caused by McCarthyism. The author’s purpose is to persuade the reader that McCarthy’s gross grab at power caused tension between Americans. It is clear that the author is directing his claims to an older and more educated audience, due to his cynical tone. I strongly agree with Roberts’ claim.

The Nazi’s and World state exercised propaganda to gain dictatorship and control over their people. It is not difficult for one man or society to dictate millions with the help of advanced technology and propaganda techniques. The propaganda techniques like card stacking, glittering generalities, and plain folks are used in the propaganda of the Nazi party(Adolf Hitler) and the World State .
The rapid reforms taking place in America, as well as the hatred of Germany and Dewey's book, sparked immense liberal changes and the censorship of Germany in American education. Progressive education was created because educational reformers and society began changing their perspectives on schools. Children’s ideas and welfare became the main focus of school. The fear of Germany during World War I also caused schools to censor positive information about Germany. Progressive education provided the basis of society’s beliefs and ideas during World War I and would continue to affect America throughout history.
Conformity and group mentality are major aspects of social influence that have governed some of the most notorious events and experiments in history. The Holocaust is a shocking example of group mentality, or groupthink, which states that all members of the group must support the group’s decisions strongly, and all evidence leading to the contrary must be ignored. Social norms are an example of conformity on a smaller scale, such as tipping your waiter or waitress, saying please and thank you, and getting a job and becoming a productive member of society. Our society hinges on an individual’s inherent need to belong and focuses on manipulating that need in order to create compliant members of society by using the ‘majority rules’ concept. This

The teacher did a recreation of the Nazi Germany with his students to teach them something. This experiment first started with classroom discipline then it moved on much farther than that. Mr. Ross named this movement “The Third Wave” because waves are very strong, they go in one direction and they are very powerful. Jones also claimed that “Its members would revolutionize the world.” Howard S. Becker said that, “It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant.”
There is a book based on a true story called The Wave, that is written by Todd Strasser. In this story a teacher conducted an experiment at a high school in Palo Alto. A history class in this school was learning about the Holocaust and how it was started. This class was directed and disciplined by the teacher, and was taught to do everything the way the teacher commanded the students. The students were swept up in the excitement, and gave up their freedom to this movement “the Wave”.

One of those themes is fascism, or more importantly, its natural appeal. Fascism would be the major theme in the novel because of it’s appeal that made The Wave so successful in becoming a militaristic movement. Ben Ross’s feelings toward being a powerful authoritarian leader amongst his students, although not really knowing what he was thinking, is a powerful example to this appeal fascism has to people.
Intro In 1920 the Reichstag, which was the German government at the time, passed a law, stating all children aged 6-14 must go to school. In the schools the Nazi’s were ordered to concentrate especially on propaganda for youth. They focused on the children from such a young age because they found it was much easier to alter their way of thinking.
