The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Tom has just seen Becky Thatcher outside of Jeff Thatcher’s house and he has immediately felt a strong connection to her. He is struck by her beauty and from then on he tries to get her attention. Right before she goes back inside she throws a flower to Tom. Becky ends up sitting next to Tom at school the next day – thanks to top-notch trickery on Tom's part. He woos her with his drawing skills and the two arrange to meet after class. She hits Tom on the hand when he writes "I love you" on his slate and shows it to her. He then decides to marry her. The text states, “‘Now it’s all done, Becky. And always after this, you know, you ain’t ever to love anybody but me, and you ain’t ever to marry anybody but me, ever never and forever. This is considered odd because they are only about 11 years old. The text also states, “‘ Why, me and Amy Lawrence —‘ The big eyes told Tom his blunder and he stopped, confused. ‘Oh, Tom! Then I ain’t the first you’ve ever been engaged to!’” (48)Tom accidentally makes a mistake telling Becky about Tom’s old crush Amy lawrence. Becky takes this personally and now the relationship is not going very good. Finally the text states “ and fell sprawling, himself, under Becky’s nose, almost upsetting her.” (73) Tom is kind of always all over Becky and doesn’t really give her any personal space. He is in a way addicted to her. All this evidence shows that Tom has a chance of proving that he can be responsible and take care of someone else but he makes a blunder and then he ends the relationship. In a way even being this young and talking about marriage is unusual. Tom is just blindly taken over by Becky Thatcher's beauty. This is showing how irresponsible Tom is and how he can be
