Four years ago, I was on my way to graduate high school and dive into business education with a desire to make a difference in the world. I remember thinking about how amazing the Toms Shoes “One for One” business model was and that I would one day be able to take care of the world as well. While the Toms business model produced immediate results, I was determined to customize my education and learn to develop long-term solutions to problems, instead. An individual’s unique experience shapes their values and, therefore, creates diversity of thought. Sustainability is a topic that involves the major population, so bringing it up to as many diverse groups as possible ensures that many voices are heard. Most often, people are a company’s most valuable asset, so everyone should have the opportunity to share ideas and contribute to a greater cause. At my internships, I loved that volunteer opportunities were weaved into the summer work schedule. It is highly beneficial to be involved and reminded that the community we operate in is the same community that experiences the aftermath of our decisions. Whether it is in ethical business conduct or sustainable opportunities, attaining a sense of fulfillment at work is crucial in order to preserve the most important components of a company.
