Total Communication Educators Should Not Be Functionally Bilingual

I believe that if total communication educator's properly, people would not be functionally bilingual. Total communication is a method of teaching deaf individuals how to acquire the spoken English language with the use of visual aids, signs, oral training, writing etc. While children are being taught with the total communication method, the educators focus is for the child to acquire the oral aspects of English language. They are not focused on the American sign language being used because it is an aide. Once the child in two the spoken English language then they may become bilingual. The definition of bilingual in this context does not apply. According to Merriam Webster's dictionary, being bilingual means being proficient in two languages.
