Life is full of tough decisions. Every day we have to make decisions, for the better or for the worst. Every decision we make affects us, even if we don’t know it. Those decisions can make us explode with thousands of emotions; happy, sadness, scared, freedom. There are many great books that express the toughness of making decisions. They can be subtle or they are loud but they will always have an effect. A great example of making a decision, not for yourself, but for someone you love is very present in ‘Of Mice and Men’ written by John Steinback. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is set during the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, The Great Depression. Many people couldn’t find jobs and started traveling to other places in search of anyone that would pay. George and Lennie are an example of this. Even though many people traveled alone, George and Lennie always traveled together. They landed a job as Ranch Hands in Soledad, California. They were offered a rough burlap mattress on a bed frame in the bunkhouse with the other ranch hands; Candy, Carlson, and Slim. Having seen how strong the bond between Candy and his dog was, they would argue that for Candy’s well being he should have kept the dog until his dying breath. Some would even say he was peer-pressured into doing so. However, if Candy truly had a strong bond with his dog, he would want his partner to be in peace and not in pain. Even though he can never replace what he had with his partner, he can always make new memories. Slim, one of the ranch hands, had a fresh batch of pups and offered one to Candy.
