At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
He has to learn to get over his anger and focus on being happy. In this book, there is a man named Edwin who is trying to help Cole. He takes a stick and holds it out to Cole, telling him that one end of the stick is his anger, and the other is his happiness. He then says to break off the left side of the stick, his anger, and to get rid of it. But, when Cole takes it off, the left side still remains.
Throughout the novel by Ben Mikealson, many characters have a heavy influence on Cole’s mental and physical life as he goes through this journey. Some of these characters include Garvey, a prison guard who supports Cole and helps him get over his anger, Peter, the now-disabled boy who Cole doesn’t know how to feel about, and Cole’s father, who beats Cole regularly for no reason, the flame that sparked Cole’s anger.

Has anyone ever called you an animal? Have you been compared to a sloth because you were lazy, or a mouse because you were quiet? In my Language Arts class, we read the book “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen. In this novel, a troubled teenage boy named Cole is banished to an island to find and heal his soul after he severely beats a kid. During his stay on the island, Cole realizes that he is similar to several different animals.
Defending Jacob With an abrupt ending and an insight on a fourteen year old boy with a cruel hobby, this intense book can have more in common with other texts than anticipated. To clarify, Defending Jacob by William Landay, “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and “The Art of Resilience” by Hara Estroff Marano display how a person owns the ability to change what happens in his or her life. This theme is exhibited through figurative language, imagery, and foreshadowing. By including figurative language, the authors of these literary works were able to enhance certain elements of the story. For example, in Defending Jacob, the neighbors continued to see Jacob as if “He was a pariah, whether he was actually guilty or not (Landay 388.).”
Touching Spirit Bear Reflection Paragraph The biggest affect of the book “Touching Spirit Bear” for me was when he actually cared for someone besides himself, or changed. One of the things that he did was cared for the baby sparrows when he saw them in the nest, and when he saw them dead, I think he changed then. Another thing that he did was when he wanted help Peter get better and not try to commit suicide. I loved that he changed and made everything better between Peter and him at the end. When he changed, it made me enjoy the book, because at first I disliked it.
He moved out of home at 20 and lives with some roommates but he never talks to them. Cole still wants to be a soccer player but can never push himself hard enough to do it. Cole’s biggest flaw is that he is apathetic to the world and everyone around him including
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. In comparison, I always had to learn things the hard way, and I always failed at what I tried to achieve. However my mistakes never stopped from moving forward and I continue to overcome any obstacles that stand in my way. Living through the hard times motivates me to continuously work hard, and never settle for
Life changes every single day, and so can we. That’s the truth, yet oftentimes we feel hopelessly stuck against our will. Why? Because the changes we seek breed uncertainty, and life can be hard to navigate when we’re uncertain about things. We feel confused and displaced, and we begin filling our gaps of understanding with stories about how life is.
Cole just doesn 't make songs that are difficult to talk about, but he also makes uplifting music. According to ineedalighthouse.org aproximately twenty percent of teens will face depression. That 's a one out of five chance that somebody in a classroom is dealing with a problem in their at school, home, or some relationship. In his latest album 2014 Forest Hills Drive he wrote a song named Love Yourz. In this song he relates his journey from rags to riches and talks about the pros of having a poor life and the cons of having a rich life.
