Through the use of characteristics and events, Ray Bradbury shows a transformation in Guy Montag throughout Fahrenheit 451. Using Clarisse McClellan as a catalyst, Broadway begins to show a change in his main character Guy Montag. Her curiosity and questioning are so unique that Montag is struck by her. Montag has never met anyone who asks “why” instead of “how," and who walks for pleasure and relaxation. Clarisse causes Montag to question the stark reality of the morally bankrupt world in which he lives. She was very curious about Montag's life she asked many questions that opened his eyes in the strange society he lives in. Clarisse asks Montag “Do you mind if I ask how long you've worked as a fireman” (pg. 5). Montag tells her that he has been a fireman since he was 20 years old, then the young girl asks another question. “Do you ever read any books you burn” (pg. 5)? Montag Laughs in her face and tells her that's against the law. Clarisse also asked Guy Montag “Are you happy?” (pg.7) before Montag could even speak. She was gone running in the moonlight in her front door shut gently.
