The Battle of Carthage or Dry Fork as it’s also known was a battle involving the United States of America federal soldiers and Missouri State Guard. This battle is known for being one of the first battles of the Civil War, taking place 5 July 1861 in Jasper County Missouri, a full 11 days prior to The Battle of Bull Run. The 1,100 federal Soldiers were under the command of Colonel Franz Sigel and the 6,000 Missouri state Guardsman under the command of Governor Claiborne F. Jackson. The Battle of Carthage did not matter at all for a strategic or tactical advantage that would play out as an advantage towards any other battle during the Civil War. In book two, Zeus’, in order to fulfill Achilleus’ request, sends a treacherous dream to Agamemnon that says, “He might take the wide-eyed city of the Trojans” (92). In the dream Nestor tells Agamemnon that if he attacks Troy immediately at full strength, then it will fall.
The goal of the 415 BCE play, The Trojan Women was to discourage war in the ancient Mediterranean world. The play showed the hardships that came with war in an attempt to end violent conflict. The same can be said about the 1971 film. The cinematized version of the play was released amidst the peak of Vietnam protest and aimed to show, yet again, the consequences of war. The film is one of the more interesting war films because its main characters are not the soldiers, but the people affected by the loss that war brought them.
Troy is seen as a tragic figure because he is seen in the play as this type of character. Troy as a young child lead himself to his own destruction or “fall.” Troy did not willingly cause himself to fall, but as a young kid he was just trying to pursue his dreams of playing baseball in the big leagues. As a kid Troy did not have his parents there to help guide him to the best decisions possible for his future. Later Cory, Troys son, is entered into the play talking about playing football and possibly taking it to the big leagues.
