When the word hero comes to mind, society generally thinks of someone with a strong hulky body, intimidating looks, and supernatural capabilities like flying feet or even eyes that shoot lasers. This is not entirely always the case, heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, with all types of special capabilities. Young Cia Vale from Joelle Charbonneau’s novel The Testing is brought up in a simple background, it is tough to stand out in the city of Five Lakes, being the daughter of one of the colony’s most prominent scientists. However, her bravery and ambition shine through as she portrays the ideal teenager. Adonis Creed, the protagonist, is torn between trying to preserve his father’s legacy and building his own. During his career, he faces Ricky Conlan, the antagonist who is a very deceptive fighter and does everything in his power in order to cheat his way into the fight. Him and his assistant both play mind games with Adonis, in order to make him forfeit even before the main event takes place. However, When Creed faces an unethical opponent he chooses to fight with a determined mind as he states, “Rock, every punch I’ve thrown has been on my own. Nobody showed me how to do this. I’m ready” (Coogler 2015). One would typically give up after facing such immoral situations, nevertheless Adonis Creed works even harder without letting the negativity in Philadelphia block his mind . His dedicated attitude, and days worth of training all shine through as soon as he enters the ring. Creed’s fearless behavior helps him remain determined to fight, and in the end it pays off when Conlan becomes a victim of Creed’s fists. Cia Vale of Five Lakes Colony, is an exemplar of the Commonwealth's ideal candidate, she is young, determined, and civic-minded, possessing mechanical skills and impressive knowledge of the natural world. She is brought up in a simple household, with not much wealth but the love of a family that is worth more than gold. She does not undergo many troubles in her past history like other heroes do. Being the daughter of the colony’s most prominent scientist, she wants her work to be as great as her father’s and truly displays her capabilities in the end. During Cia’s final victory, she wants to convey a message to the candidates who are going back to Tosu City with her. As the conversation breaks down between the survivors Cia boldly states, “I am an adult. Ever since I was little I watched my parents and the other adults and wished for the day I would be one of them - confident and strong. Never have I felt so unsure of myself,” (Charbonneau 19). Unlike Creed, Cia actually admires her parents and their work. She wants to turn out just like them in the near future. Unfortunately, she is not brought up with a lavish lifestyle, or even some basic facilities every household requires, although she does not let this affect her future. She believes family is the key to success and proves it by following their tracks and
