Turkle And Gopnik Essay

Now a day you never see someone without a phone in their hand. Is the world becoming imprisoned by new media and technology? Turkle and Gopnik wrote text about this question. They wanted to see if the new media was destroying us or helping us. They take different stand points, but they bring up a lot of the same things. In Sherry Turkle’s text “Always On” she shares her views on new media and how it is slowly ruining humanity. In that text she talk about how interactions have become shallower and dumber. Gopnik’s paper “Diagnosing the Digital Revolution: Why It’s So Hard to Tell Whether It’s Really Changing Us” was a little more interesting because she mentioned other writers in it.
When Gopnik calls Turkle a “digital pessimist” she is being hypocritical because they both see the negative side of technology. Both authors have insights on the good and bad of technology. It depends how people want to look …show more content…

Relating back to the paragraph above, trains started bringing people which soon over crowded cities and telegrams made people seem more distant because they were talking in person. It also is dangerous when people spend all their time one the technology. Now you go to a restaurant and see people on their phones instead of talking to each other. Most people before they go to bed sit in their phones and check their newsfeed, look at picture, or watch television. With all the access people have to other peoples pictures it become easy to impersonate them. It is a danger to children as well as adults. It is also scary that people can access our information and you will not have any idea that they have it all. Another negative is that it messes with out attention. They are so focused on what is happening on their screens that they do not pay attention while walking or driving. That is dangerous not only to the user but to whoever is around. With new technology generations start to miss out on the
