I created this lesson plan myself based on lesson plans that I found on-line. I combined elements of several lessons to create this lesson. The various lesson plans that I looked at are listed in the Works Cited section. I inserted my lesson into a modified version of the UHD lesson plan. The TEKS do not specifically specify the teaching of third parties and their effect on the elections. But, throughout the TEKS, there is an emphasis on civics. The TEKS spell out our responsibility, as a citizen, to work within our constitutional republic to work to improve our communities and our nation. He feels that political parties are formed to stop change from happening or to influence change to come about (Minogue, p. 73). In a two-party system, there are many issues and many viewpoints on those issues. When a group of citizens want to bring (or hinder) change, a third party can be formed. This third party can then bring attention to the issue, causing voters to reconsider their own viewpoint. When voters change their opinions on the issue, the major parties will begin to listen.
