My theory is the Uncertainty Reduction theory. The program was developed in 1975 by Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese. It is a communication theory from the post positivist tradition. It is also one of the only communication theories that specifically looks into the initial interaction between people prior to the actual communication process. The theory asserts the notion that, when interacting, people need information about the other party in order to reduce their uncertainty. In gaining this information people are able to predict the other's behavior and resulting actions, according to the theory this is crucial in the development of any relationship. The theory was made to explain how communication is used to reduce uncertainties between strangers engaging in their first conversation together. The film that I tied my theory with would be Hitch. Hitch is a 2005 American romantic comedy film directed by Andy Tennant and starring Will Smith. Will Smith play the main fictional character also known as the professional date doctor. Before he could approach her some guy chip went to her first. Chip insists on complimenting her and keep trying to talk to her even though Sara told him nicely that she was not interested. When the chip was not getting the idea Alex begins to help Sara by acting as her boyfriend so that chip would go away. Interactive strategy is being used at this moment because this is the first time Alex talked to her and later on started to have a conversation with her.
