November 2, 2015 The Fuel of the Civil War “Life Among the Lowly” or more commonly known as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a fictional anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852; As a result, this novel became known as the book that “laid the groundwork for The Civil War” and also fueled the fire for the Abolitionists’-a group dedicated to ending all forms of slavery- cause during the eighteen-fifties. Uncle Tom's Cabin contributed to the outbreak of war by personalizing the economic, political, and moral arguments about slavery. This created a lot of conflict and controversy between, not only the North and South, but also Stowe and the critics who viewed her book as “too miniscule to end slavery on its own” and many accused Stowe of fabricating unrealistic, one-sided images of the slavery in the south. Yet, this book ended up being a bestseller and thousands of copies were sold. It is believed the reason is because Harriet gave a face to slavery, Uncle Tom, and because of that it all seemed more real or more personal, and by letting you get to know a character it is almost like you know them. But there are some who make an understandable argument about the character personality of Tom and claim it to be unrealistic. What these people don’t realize though is that he is a fictional character, and even if his personality seems unrealistic doesn’t mean that there isn’t someone out there who acts similar to him.
