After reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, I really gain a lot. I begin to understand the tragic history of the slaves in American and the inequality among people at that period. Uncle Tom, as one of the protagonists in the book, is a good slave. However, he can not escape from his tragic fate. His owners can deal with him at any time according to whatever they want. Finally, he is abused by Legree and passes away. In Tom's lifetime, he has totally three masters: Mr. Shelby, St. Clare, and Legree. They share both similarities and differences. Mr.Shelby is Tom's first owner. Stowe characterizes Mr.Shelby as a kind and generous person. He is described as an evil and malicious person in the book. He forces his slaves to do mountain-like work and gives them a little food to eat. After Tom disagrees to whip one of the slaves for Legree, the evil slave owner begin to swipe Tom. "well, here's a pious dog, at last, let down among us sinners!-a saint, a gentleman, and no less, to talk to us sinners about our sin!" demonstrates Legree's viciousness. From Mr. Shelby to Legree, the tragic experiences and lives of the slaves get worse. The lives of slaves in Mr. Shelby's place are generally happy; the experiences in St. Clare's farm become a little bit bad because of the existence of Marie; the livelihoods in Legree's ranch are totally different.
