II. Defiining the underground railroad and its use. A. It was made to aid slaves in escaping to freedom. 1. Abolitionists helped to create the underground railroad becuase they were against slavery and thought it was wrong.( Eastern Illinois University ). Conductors were the engines of the train during the underground railroads process. A. Conductors were people who were against slavey and helped free slaves from the states that enabled it. 1. Conductors were against people owning slaves and would use there homes and other forms of shelter slaves from those trying to find them. It was a very long journey that had many risks, and laws made it even more difficult. A. Slaves endured many challenges and disifered many codes to aquire freedom. 1. Some of the code the slaves used included using different terms for the people and things included. The conductors and passengers were the people who helped the slaves escape and the slaves themselves as the railroad was the connections of shelters throughout the U.S. The slaves could also find the railroad by decoding the lyrics of music and following to ahouse with lantern lit at a certain time of day.
