The Underlying Causes of World War I
The air is crisp as the breeze flows through the silk curtains, making a rippling noise that fills the silent room. The sun beams onto the kitchen table shining the tears in the eyes of my mother. Our breath matching in intensity as the news of war rips though the country like a wildfire. The rooms despondent disposition is sliced through when my mother mutters “Better war than this perpetual waiting” with a smile. This moment mimics that of many families as World War I began to start. World War I started June 28, 1914 when the nation of Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This historical milestone came detrimental consequences. Around thirty million soldiers had suffered casualties during this war, with about ten million perishing on the battlefield and the other 20 million suffering severe injuries. Empires crumbled like a cookie under pressure in the hands of civilians.The robust giants of the Europe fell from their mighty towers shatter the picture perfect image of Europe forever. However, there is one question that still looms over the heads of historians as they try to pinpoint the underlying, or repressed, causes of World War I and the measures of prevention that could have been taken. An important key to point out, is that the high pressures present before the war were because of the inflation of nationalism. Nationalism, or the sense of pride in one’s nation, caused for many strides to be taken. Nonetheless this stride caused for great setbacks as well. In 1871 the unification of Germany and Italy brought even higher tensions into Europe. The unification of these
