Gordon S. Wood, “the preeminent historian of the Revolution”, is a well known American historian who has received several awards such as the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize for his historical books. In his book, The American Revolution: A History, he breaks down the key events based on his experiences and knowledge on the Revolutionary period. Wood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 27,1933. Wood teaches at many liberal renowned universities such as Brown, Cambridge, Northwestern , and Harvard. Now being eighty one years old, he recently retired from Brown University and lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1789, Alexander Hamilton took office as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton believed in centralized government and wanted to create ways for the nation as whole to pay off all war debts, raise government revenues, and create a national bank. Amongst many of Hamilton’s duties as Secretary of Treasury; was to formulate a financial plan to alleviate the country’s hefty debt from the Revolutionary War. He believed that since most of the war debt was incurred by the States but for the benefit of the entire nation, the debts from the war should be assumed by the federal government.

The Revolution was a success, the Articles of Confederation were a failure, and the new Constitution was in its early stages. George Washington became the first president of the United States and established many precedents for the future leaders. All americans wanted the United States to grow stronger, lots of conflicts between whose view of america is best for our nation, Alexander Hamilton or Thomas Jefferson. Alexander Hamilton’s point of view was best for America because Hamilton wanted a strong federal government, he agreed foreign policy, and the Constitution to grow bigger.
Midterm 1 Explain some contradictions within the American Revolution, which were explain in the class and the text. The United States now is one of the top nations in the world. A couple of hundreds of years ago, it was a bunch of colonies loosely connected by the constitution. Before the states became connected into one country, it still had to go through a revolution to become independent of Great Britain. In the American Revolution there were some contradictions that happened: for example the Boston Tea party and Thomas Jefferson owning slaves.
The American Revolution was not avoidable because of British policies that were unfair to colonists. An example is the Proclamation of 1763 which prohibited colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains. This policy limited opportunity for colonists. Another issue that angered colonists was the increase of taxation without representation. The colonists reaction to these policies were protests, boycotts, and harassing tax collectors.

Of the founding fathers of our nation, history often remembers the ones who shaped our nation the most. Of course, history is shaped by those that survive, and so the hundreds of accomplishments that Alexander Hamilton was able to achieve in his short life time mostly go unremembered. The United State’s first Secretary of Treasury shaped the early economy of the nation in ways that still affect us today, yet, before the hit broadway musical about him, most people remembered him as the guy on the ten-dollar bill and the guy that Aaron Burr shot. Alexander Hamilton did so much more than that.
Colonies fought and won a war against Britain to declare their independence. In the eighteenth century, being an American meant having a government that changes and evolves over time. It meant having ideas that change over time for the benefit of the people. While some of their ideas were terrible, they did help shape both Americans and America to what it is today.
