Gordon S. Wood, “the preeminent historian of the Revolution”, is a well known American historian who has received several awards such as the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize for his historical books. In his book, The American Revolution: A History, he breaks down the key events based on his experiences and knowledge on the Revolutionary period. Wood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 27,1933. Wood teaches at many liberal renowned universities such as Brown, Cambridge, Northwestern , and Harvard. Now being eighty one years old, he recently retired from Brown University and lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
War and Tension From the readings we find that there were many causes of tension and aspects during and after the French and Indian War. Many things built up over time and there was a general sense of tension between all of the empires. This only continued through the years with numerous wars between English, French, and Natives. These all led to the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and led America one step closer to the American Revolution. Our readings for this week show different aspects of one story and help create a narrative of the issues occurring and the outcomes of the tensions of America at the time.
The debt from this war almost destroyed the British government. It was this debt that caused tensions that led to the Revolutionary War. To recover money spent in the French and Indian War, the British Parliament levied taxes on the colonies. In
The French and Indian War plunged Britain deeply into debt. As a result, the taxes paid by citizens in Britain rose sharply. Britain then imposed the Sugar and Stamp Act. This caused crisis in the colonies.
The French and Indian War was won by the British which meant that the French had to get out of North America. One of the issues that came up was that the British, after winning the war, were in debt. It was hard for them to pay for the war so they began to tax the people in Europe and the american colonists. This angered the colonists and brought resentment from the colonists towards the British. This war altered the political, economic, and ideological relations between the British and its American colonies through a series of actions taken by each of the empires involved in this war, more specifically the British.
Question 1: Explain some contradictions within the American Revolution, which were explain in the class and the text. The Social Contract by John Locke stated that every individual should have the right to life, liberty and property. But, the elite Americans did not agree with the “property” part. During the revolutionary war, the Americans were fighting for their freedom from the British, but domestic freedom within was a different war itself.
The British and Americans fought the French. Britain was already low on money and to try and get more they started taxing the American colonist even more. This did not help the tension between them. This event in turn cause the Stamp Act which was higher taxation on the American colonists. Another event would be the Battle of Bunker Hill.
The French and Indian war was the spark of the rebellion for various causes and reasons. The French and Indian War was caused by the hostility and hatred the Native Americans and the American colonists had for each other. There had been various incidents where either group had attacked each other. The American colonists felt entitled to their new land and wanted it all to themselves, as a result the American colonists demanded the British to remove the Native Americans from their land. At the time the French wanted to gain control over the colonies so they took advantage of the situation and allied with the Native Americans.
After the French and Indian War, the British and the colonists had to face rising tensions and problems resulting from the war. Due to a massive debt from two wars, the British king had to recover as quickly as possible. Since the British considered the war started in the colonies, the blame was placed on the colonists and thus the British became more involved in the colonies. Due to increased economic policies and tyrannic rulership from 1763 to 1783, ideas of American independence changed drastically from wanting fair representation to complete freedom from the crown.
Was Revolution Avoidable? Could the American Revolution be avoided? This question is often asked by historians and today my soul purpose for writing this essay is to answer that question. The American Revolution couldn’t have been avoided. The revolution occurred because of clash of interest of british and colonist, Inflaming tensions by the colonist also cause revolution with Great Britain, and the third reason why the american revolution couldn’t have been avoided was the Boston Massacre.
