The murder of Christopher Wallace (The Notorious Big still remains an unsolved mystery. He was killed in a drive-by shooting on March 7, 1997 around 12:47 a.m. According to the FBI case file, he was traveling with his entourage after the Soul Train Music Awards on Wilshire Boulevard, and a car pulled up beside him at began firing. Witnesses claimed a black male dressed up in a blue suit with a bow tie began shot four times in the front passenger seat where Biggie Smalls where seating. The weapon that was used was a 9mm pistol was used to kill Biggie Smalls while driving in a Chevy Suburban.
Adam Walsh was the first born of the host of America’s Most Wanted, John Walsh. He disappeared from a Sears store in Hollywood, Florida in 1981 when his mother left him at a videogame display to find and purchase an item. John emphasizes in his book Tears of Rage, that this kind of thing did not happen in the ‘80s and that the police simply did not know how to handle it. At this time, our criminal justice system was just starting to develop.
One of these being the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Survey, which is filled out by most police departments and divisions. Yet, this survey only records information about the crime, and nothing about race. Another police record is the Uniform Crime Reporting Incident-based Survey (UCR-2). Similar to the UCR, this survey also records information on the crime and the parties involved in committing the offence. In addition, the UCR-2 records social characteristics of victims, age and gender, relationship between the offender and victim, and date of birth.
An excellent example of the innovative use of technology is ICAM (Information Collection for Automated Mapping)—an easy-to-use, PC-based, mouse-driven mapping system created by Chicago police officers. ICAM has been installed in all twenty-five of our police district stations so that police personnel—from beat officers to commanders—can quickly and easily generate maps showing the crime patterns in their particular neighborhoods. Just as important, ICAM is allowing police personnel to share this information with the community, so that it can be better informed and empowered to solve problems. ICAM is only one example of how we are using technology to support police.” Community members have been given cell phones specifically for contacting their beat officers quickly.
Reflection 3: Denver PD On April 13, 2023, Sergeant Damon Bowser and Crime Analyst Samantha Diemer of the Denver Police Department attended our course to speak about policing gangs in Denver, as well as describing the roles of gang units and crime analysts within. Bowser began the presentation speaking about his role in the gang unit as the investigative supervisor, which included all gang crimes going directly to him, as well as all juvenile with handgun cases and graffiti cases. The methods for measuring and reporting crime are essential not only for law enforcement but also for the general public. The three forms of reporting methods are UCR, NIBRS, and NCVS. These reports can show us whether the crime rates are dropping or continuing to grow. UCR is the Uniform Crime Report. This report serves to show a reliable group of criminal justice statistics for law enforcement.
The Unified Crime Report (UCR) is the basic police crime reporting system that has been around it seems like forever. Local police departments report all the crime that has been reported inside their jurisdiction on a yearly basis to the state police who in turns gives it to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) so that they can compile a each year to state police who in turn report that to the FBI. It is by far the most widely used report for the current statistics on reported crime in the United States. “Some critics take issue with the way the FBI records data and counts crimes. According to the “Hierarchy Rule”, in a multiple-offense incident, only the most serious crimes are counted.”

When making the crime reporting programs successful, they must follow though, citizens of community and etc… needs and want to be up to date and feel safe. To make the reporting programs successful it needs to also be very correct.
Picture this you are police officer on duty being dispatched to the International Airport with the description of an individual male in his mid-thirty’s making usual contact with TSA. When you arrive on the scene, you begin to approach the individual and try to engage in conversation. The man begins to yell at you and tell you this is matter of national security and I need to speak with an FBI agent. At that point you try to collect information from him, such his name and what he is doing at the airport. The man keeps yelling at you then proceeds to tell you, do you see that?
Since the beginning of recorded time, people have always wanted protection from danger. Real police work involves a police officer being able to serve and protect, police officers are suppose to enforce laws, maintain order and keep crime rate down. This essay will scrutinize Baltimore, as well as the broader struggle over crime and policing. Both, the Uniform Crime Report and the National Crime Victimization Survey addresses how we should shape policies yearly. Throughout the UCR report, crime index offenses are the ones being reported such as violent crimes of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, robbery, forcible rape, arson and etc. The crime report itself involves around 17,000 law enforcement agencies reporting yearly. Not to Mention, one of the differences between the two, is that the UCR reports crimes known to the police which is why the NCVS crime report was created to allow the statistics to be more accurate by allowing victim citizens to anonymously mention their crime experiences that were not reported to the police. The Department of Justice has a long history of enforcing the law and defending the interests of the United State. Starting out as the Office of the Attorney General in 1789, the one person position was responsible for prosecuting and conducting all suits brought to the Supreme Court and giving advice and opinions on all questions of the law (“About DOJ”, n.d.). When the work became too much for one person, Congress passed an act to establish the Department of Justice in 1870. Increasing litigation prompted the hiring of more private attorneys to handle all criminal prosecutions and civil suits with the Attorney General as the head of the agency (“About DOJ”, n.d.).
