The purpose of this paper is to visually analyze the stylistic approach of this “unknown” piece of art. Using this, I will then decide what stylistic period the work of art comes from using techniques and processes learned in art history. The “unknown” piece of art is depicting a naked man falling backwards onto the ground. The ground in this case is a slab of rock, slightly rolling and uneven visually, but nothing more. Both of his feet are still on the ground, however are close to losing all balance; his right hand is also supporting his fall, while his left hand seems to be putting it in front of his face as if he is protecting himself from something (the pose reminds me of the action of blocking the sun with your arm/hand). The tips of his middle and ring finger and his whole pinky of his left hand have been broken off. His torso has a certain amount of torsion in it going towards the right arm. His face seems to be the face of a middle-aged man because of a slightly wrinkled appearance but not enough where he is clearly in old age. The three main requirements have been filled: intense pathos, human physical extremes, and climatic moment. The pathos is shown in the face, body, imbalance, color, and placement of the man’s extremities to defend him. The physical extremes are shown in the man’s “balanced imbalance” while any viewer of this “unknown” work can clearly see that the man will eventually fall, he is frozen in time having never fallen; this shows the man’s will and determination to not fall onto the ground.
