In today’s society, there is such a big focus point on what we look like. With all of the technology that is available today, adolescents grow up with unrealistic body expectations. From photoshop, to the fashion industry, to what adolescents grew up with, there is a driving force that pushes adolescents to strive for perfection, and nothing else. There is so much pressure from the media, and the public, that adolescents feel forced to have a “perfect” body. Adolescents have grown up with Barbie, a figure made for little girls, to show them that they can be anything. Barbie was released in 1959, she had measurements of 12 inches in height, a 5.25 inch chest, and a 3.5 inch waist (Kramer). This pressure that is placed on adolescents is so heavy that it leads them to be so insecure that they spend a lot of money to “fix” themselves. It can be argued by some that insecurity is a normal part of growing up. However the fashion industry pushes clothing that only promotes an anorexic body type.
