Romeo and Juliet is a story about their tragic love. In “Romeo and Juliet” Shakespeare says, “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; Being purg'd, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; Being vex'd, a sea nourished with lovers' tears; What is it else? A madness most discreet, A choking gall, and a preserving sweet.”. (Romeo and Juliet1.1.185-189) Some would agree Romeo's love for Juliet was filled with smoke but they both saw a spark in each other. The smoke may have killed them both but they were in love. I believe that Romeo saw the spark in Juliet because he consistently refers to Juliet being his light. So this quote shows a bit of what their love story is like. Romeo was speaking about unrequited love. This quote is important because Romeo explains to his cousin Benvolio about his unrequited love and why he is sad about love. Since the story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story so his perspective on love is essential. What happens in the story when this quote is said is when Romeo and his cousin are walking, Benvolio questions Romeo as to why he is sad and Romeo answers with love, Bevolio is confused because he thought that would make him happy but Romeo explains his love is unrequited. Shakespeare's quote holds a metaphor for love, “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs;”. Shakespeare's metaphor means that a lover's sigh produces smoke and if all goes well the smoke should clear up and leave a sparkle in the lover's eyes, but if the love isn't returned then tears shall stream down as if eyes were irradiated by the smoke that never cleared because of the sighs.
