To what extent do you think the U.S.-Canadian magazine dispute was motivated by genuine desires to protect Canadian culture?
I think a huge part of the motivation was to protect Canadian culture. A lot of times with these issues, the only way to solve them is with economic related solutions. That doesn’t always mean their motivation was purely economic. As someone who lives in the US, and as someone who lives less than 3 hours away from Canada, often times the two can end up blending together in many ways. This is especially true in the northern midwest where I’m from. I don’t see a problem with Canada trying to draw some sort of line between their own cultural values, businesses, and media vs US dominated markets. American magazines have a lot of readers commanding high dollar for things like advertising. Combine these factors with global recognition and it makes it harder for local magazine’s to compete.

To what extent do you think the government of Canada was pressured to seek to protect its market because of the financial interests of the Canadian magazine industry?

Here if we want a magazine that’s imported it usually cost quite a big more than a US magazine. I still have it available to me, I just would have to choose to pay more. I think there could be solutions that do not involve taking the ability to buy American magazine’s away completely if that’s what a consumer prefers, but still not make it harder for Canadian publications to compete with a more dominant US market. When you have dominant markets that are more successful than your local markets, you have to fight to keep Canadian ideals a priority. People are consuming what’s most widely available to
