In the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, censorship is shown throughout the story. Books were the enemy of the society, so fireman removed books by burning them (Fahrenheit 451). Censorship is an unique term because it refers to a group or a single person “who examines books, movies, etc., and removes things that are considered to be offensive, immoral, harmful to society, etc.” (Merriam-Webster). Furthermore, many people question if censorship is good because it creates safety and security for societies, or bad because it makes decisions for people like a dictator who limits freedom or rights. These countries use censorship to protect the society by using fear or violence to control people similar to a dictator’s country. In a democratic country, protection could be banning media or limiting internet access to prevent revolts, riots, or rebellions. The societies that go so far to stop harmful info about them are usually totalitarian countries like USSR/Communist Russia, but some can be democratic countries like the United States. Similarly, these super countries use censorship because of social media and structures can pose “a threat to moral values” (Aliprandini). These threats are referring to people, and the social areas which are online media through phones, computers, newspapers, television, etc., may change the person’s view of what’s right or wrong. Countries like USSR/Communist Russia go beyond judicial laws to suppress harmful information. Instead of fair trials and fair sentences, citizens who wanted change were either executed or exiled. Communist leaders used censorship on people who spread info, by removing them and their ideas from the dictative country. They were either exiled or executed (Modern World History). In the leader's mind, their ideas would hurt citizens moral values, and would lead to revolutions/riots. Leaders would go so far to imprison or execute in order to maintain their power (Modern World History). This is only shown in totalitarian societies, as maintaining power is far more difficult than non-dictator countries. These countries only use censorship as an “act of protection for the good of a particular group, or for the country” (Aliprandini). A few ways of protection could be government, schools, even parents banning/restricting or removing websites that post or share adult material or fake material, so that children can still develop and learn.
