Some people have assumed that he is a villain due to the fact that he gave Juliet the vail, and hoped that she wouldn’t die, although that this is partly true we cannot forget the fact that he did it for Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence wouldn’t kill someone to dodge responsibility, that not only will go against his job as a priest but also against religion, because it says do not kill/murder. Being a priest doesn’t spot Friar Lawrence from helping his close friend, the
Romeo and Juliet is a play about star-crossed lovers. Romeo is apart of a high class Montague family; their rival is the Capulet family. Romeo falls in love with the daughter of Lord Capulet. They want to get married but they know that this will not be approved between their family feud. This is why they secretly ask Friar Laurence to marry them in secret.
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the “star-crossed lovers” ultimately lose their lives because of the actions of Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence should be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because of his irresponsibility. He is the one that married Romeo and Juliet. If Friar Laurence had established a backup plan in the first place, Romeo could have gotten the news. If Friar Laurence just told Romeo and Juliet's parents in the first place, they would not have had to hide anything.
From my first thoughts, Friar Laurence is looked upon as a respectable, and trustworthy man. We, as the readers, know that he does not have these qualities. In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence is to blame because he pushed Romeo and Juliet to get married, he was unable to get the letter to Romeo on time, and he gave Juliet a potion that put her to sleep for 42 hours. Doing that tricked everyone into thinking she was dead.
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare most of the blame can be pinned to Friar Lawrence because he married Romeo and Juliet in private, he devised a dangerous scheme to get Juliet out of a wedding, and he left Juliet alone at the site of Romeo’s death. One piece of evidence that puts the blame on Friar Lawrence is that he married Romeo and Juliet without their parent’s knowledge. In Act 2 Scene 6 of the play Romeo goes to Friar to get married to Juliet. Friar Lawrence knows the two had met only the night before yet he still married them. He also did not talk to either the bride or groom’s parents about the marriage at all, they found out only after Romeo and Juliet had killed themselves.
Every day, people make rash decisions. These rash decisions bring about many unfortunate events, but rarely death. Because of Friar Lawrence’s immensely important role in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence’s rash decisions bring about many unfortunate events. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence causes Romeo and Juliet to die a tragic death because of Friar Lawrence’s rashness and lack of good judgement. Friar Lawrence is primarily responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because of his rash choice to marry the two teenagers.
Will Romeo and Juliet’s tragedy be justified to one person? These two star crossed lovers will get married, but there are big problems with their relationship. Their families don’t get along and their parents don’t know about them. As, Juliet’s father is planning on marrying her to another guy, her father does not know about the relationship. Friar Lawrence is someone to blame for this tragedy of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Shakespeare portrays both Friar Lawrence and Juliet as characters who make impulsive and hasty decisions throughout the book. Juliet is proven to be naive because she immediately falls for, and marries Romeo, and she agrees to an unintelligent plan that the Friar impulsively comes up with. Friar Laurence is proven to be idiotic countless times, he marries the two children, and to keep the secret, he comes up with a devious plan, which ends up killing Romeo and Juliet. Juliet and Friar Laurence's foolishness is eventually the bane of Romeo and Juliet, the two constantly make hasty decisions which have dire consequences which influence many character in Romeo and Juliet.
Have you ever wondered how people in the past would react to present time or what job they would have? If all the characters from Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare found a time machine and came to the present, most of them would easily fit in. Even though this seems strange, they could all manage a job from present time. Friar Lawrence for example could easily be a mental health counselor and marriage and family therapist. It would be a bizarre switch, from a holy man to a marriage counselor, but he has all of the best qualities for the job.
Friar Lawrence Friar Lawrence, the man who just wanted to help, but only caused more unnecessary bloodshed. One of the most integral characters in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence has more to him than most would think, he isn’t just another side character that the story could do without. He either forges or propels some integral points of the story, an example being how he married Romeo and Juliet. Let’s take a look at some of this man’s more defining characteristics. Friar Lawrence was an extremely trusted individual.
“Just because someone has a following does not mean that they are a good person or a good friend.” These wise words, spoken by popular social media influencer Emma Chamberlain, explain that on social media, obtaining many followers does not indicate the existence of kindness in an individual. To corroborate her words, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence harbors harmful intentions, although his position as a church official elevates him among society. This elevated societal position brings him many followers despite his suspicious behavior. Friar Lawrence’s blunders and canon law infractions reveal his troublesome nature.
The Failure of One, The Fall of Many Friar Lawrence, a holy man who does not stand to his title, betraying an oath of truth and dignity made by a supposive wise and generous priest. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the patriarch defies the laws of Verona’s Prince Escalus and the principles anyone should follow for personal morals. The votary betrayed the trust that was enlisted upon him by Romeo, Juliet, and every other citizen of Verona. The pontiff knew of the hazards that had been laid out throughout Romeo and Juliet’s story, yet constantly made risky choices that would show most negative consequences being put on others not including himself. Although he had made some well-intentioned decisions, they were made without complete or valid thought, and were not those of a rational adult.
Romeo and Juliet, act 2 scene 3. Shakespeare uses Friar Laurence to bring insight to the play by speaking on herbs, plants, and virtues. (Shakespeare 2.3.1-22) Friar is a man who wants nothing more but to end this war between the Capulets and Montagues. He is a man who uses herbs and plants, which Shakespeare uses to later tie in to the play making the importance of this and Friar finally click.
I believe that many characters contributed to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet but i think that the highest contributor was Friar Lawrence because he got them married so quickly and secretly. This was the main contributor to the problem that escalated out of control so quickly. My first reason for believing this was mostly friar lawrence’s fault is because he got them married which is irreversible and caused so many problems because it was a secret. Where this started to become a real problem is when Paris tried to marry Juliet she as was already married.
In Act IV, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is forced to marry Paris and meets him in the church along with Friar Lawrence. It is after Paris leaves that Juliet reveals to Friar Laurence her plans to end her life if she can’t have Romeo. Friar Laurence offers to help Juliet fake her death so that she can run away with Romeo and be with him at last. In this scene, Shakespeare characterizes Juliet as immature through her close minded stubbornness and her desperate urge to be with Romeo.
