Health promotion and well-being of patients are the fundamental focus for nurses who are in practice. However, nurses often find themselves in situations where they are forced to make judgements and use interventions under circumstances that they were either underprepared, unprepared, or uncomfortable with. Despite this, nurses still make a conscious effort to use their critical skills and knowledge to the best of their ability for the safety and in the best interest of their patients. Carper’s Patterns of Knowing are integrated into the care that is being rendered to patients. For the greater part of nurses’ task intuition plays a vital role especially when a nurse has been in the profession for an extended period. They can notice when their patients baseline or status has changed. In an article by Bridgett Sellars (2011) the author writes, “Vigilance is the essence of caring in nursing…this fundamental aspect of our work” (p. 109). The simplest detail in information and collection in data can help prevent situations that are harmful to a person’s health. Lack of communication in an effective way can lead to unsafe patient care, medication errors, and negative patient outcomes. According to Talbot, Watson, Tariman, & Sorenson, (2017), “It is critical to that nurses stay informed and in constant communication with the healthcare team to deliver excellent care”.
